The Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy (ICHC) comprises a broad composition of Churches. We are committed to promoting, maintaining and developing, relevant, flexible, and competent Chaplaincy services within the Aotearoa New Zealand healthcare environment. The primary purpose of our ministry is to foster good health through excellence in pastoral care. Our Chaplains stand alongside other healthcare professionals in the hospital setting. We are committed to the principles of partnership expressed in the Treaty of Waitangi. Spiritual care and support is provided by Christian Chaplains in the most appropriate way for all healthcare clients, regardless of religious denomination, faith-orientation, beliefs, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Clients are at liberty to access the spiritual care of their choice. Our Chaplains’ role is to coordinate that process.

Ideally we are looking for someone who:

  • Is theologically educated (at degree level)
  • Accredited for faith community leadership
  • Has substantial experience in a ministry of pastoral care
  • Has collaborated ecumenically
  • Upholds Tikanga Māori as described in the Job Description
  • Has worked with people from diverse faith and cultural backgrounds
  • Has training relevant to healthcare chaplaincy, for example CPE
  • Can provide effective and compassionate pastoral care in a healthcare setting
  • Can lead religious services in a way that is sensitive to the healthcare context
  • Has highly effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to reflect critically upon experience of self and others
  • Can manage the diverse demands of a chaplaincy caseload
  • Ability to work collaboratively and sustain constructive working relationships with chaplains and other healthcare professionals
  • Has confidence in working with the diversity of service users
  • Ability to support, encourage and train volunteers
  • Ability to help develop chaplaincy services in the hospital context
  • Has effective IT skills and
  • Is able to provide on-call cover as part of a team roster.
