The employer

Located in the historic suburb of Parnell, Holy Trinity Cathedral is one of New Zealand’s most iconic buildings and fulfils an essential role in the life and mission of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland. The Cathedral endeavours to be a place of welcome to the 100,000 people who pass through its doors each year and offers a variety of ministries to the wider communities of Auckland and New Zealand.

The role

Music is a crucial part of the identity of Holy Trinity Cathedral. Your role will be to maintain and enhance the excellent reputation of the Cathedral as a place of worship and community outreach. The new Director of Choirs will play a major part in shaping the future of Cathedral choral music in a city which boasts a vibrant and flourishing musical culture. You will work with a dynamic and supportive team at an exciting time in the life of Auckland's newly-consecrated Anglican Cathedral.

The tasks

A typical week for the Director of Choirs might consist of: rehearsing and performing with the Cathedral Choirs for three choral services, liaising with local schools and music organisations to promote and encourage membership of the Cathedral choirs, working with the Cathedral clergy and Cathedral Organist to produce an ongoing music programme, planning larger scale choral and orchestral works in collaboration with other Auckland music groups, finding performance opportunities for the Cathedral Choirs which promote and support the Cathedral’s ministries, and preparing to attend and contribute to a board meeting.

About you

You will have a sensitivity and regard for the traditions of the Anglican Church combined with a high degree of energy and enterprise to lead and develop the Cathedral’s choral music programme. You will appreciate the nature of the Three Tikanga Church in Aotearoa-New Zealand and be committed to celebrating the diversity of this country’s cultural and musical heritage. You will be passionate about working with people of all ages and champion inclusivity while being committed to producing choral music at a high level. An ability to work cooperatively alongside the Cathedral clergy and the Cathedral Organist is a prerequisite.
